Emory Goizueta Sample Essays set 1

Emory Goizueta Essay 1: Define your short-term post-MBA career goals. How are your professional strengths, past experience and personal attributes aligned with these goals?

In line with my interest to work as a “Solution Consultant” in a top management consultancy firm such as Mckinsey Solutions or as a “Senior Presales consultant” in a software product conglomerate in Atlanta, my immediate goal through MBA, will be to learn the nuances of the field. I intend to work with intangible data to assist clients, build solutions and solve real
time problems.

Since completing under-graduation, I have worked in Samsung first as a software developer in the Set Top Box domain then transitioned into Presales consulting. In this role, I was exposed to international market and worked with prestigious clients in India, South East Asia and the Middle East. I was able to interact well with CXOs of different verticals in events and summits. I led many initiatives of defining solution proposals and was given a chance to travel to client locations. This position apprised me of the significant role a technical sales consultant plays in balancing the customer requirements with that of the company’s products.

Initially having worked in a team under experienced consultants, I have gained valuable experience in terms of business and technology functions and a wholesome of consulting skills. I was able to correlate some of my attributes that could assist me in consulting. These include perseverance, a will to learn and ambition. Overall personal growth is important to me. I want a career where I can lead and take decisions.

In keeping with these desires, I was excited to discover that I could work with Fortune 500 companies to solve real time business challenges in Goizueta Marketing strategy Consultancy subject while talking with current student Sanibh Aryan and reading student blog. As such, I believe that my learning and training at Emory will prove invaluable in shaping my attributes to better align with my targets, both short-term and long.

Emory Goizueta Essay 2: The business school is named for Roberto C. Goizueta, former Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, who led the organization for 16 years, extending its global reach, quadrupling consumption, building brand responsibility, and creating unprecedented shareholder wealth. Mr. Goizueta's core values guide us in educating Principled Leaders for Global Enterprise. Provide an example of your leadership - professional or personal - and explain what you learned about yourself through the experience.

In November 2014, I was tasked by the Regional Marketing Headquarters to set up an enterprise business showroom that would exhibit all the products and solutions that Samsung offers.

I knew I had to be meticulous in my planning given the multi-million Rupee investment. I visited the site early to find a raw place with only furniture and sealed cardboard boxes. By the end of the day, I had solutions planned out for each zone in a slideshow.

The crux of my task was to coordinate among four teams from three different organizations. Leading from the technical department, I was accountable for deploying the solutions, addressing extra requirements, assisting pre-sales managers and streamlining the whole
process. I delegated certain accessory tasks to my planning team, and got operations going.

I felt that these teams were good individually, but didn’t have the complete information about what could be the fault. I brought together the whole team and organized a knowledge-sharing session. With the inter-team fluidity thus achieved, analysis and delineation of task into sections became simpler. We were able to finish the first section of the work in just one day and I was relieved to see the to-do list get shorter. The next section of the list took more time with some unexpected technical glitches. After a few brainstorming sessions, we were able to work out simple solutions. I was successful in motivating the whole team to put in the extra effort required such that together, we finally achieved the milestone within a week.

I learnt about the power of initiative, leadership and perseverance. I took the ownership of important decisions and led a diverse team to beat a seemingly impossible deadline. In taking the responsibility of this project, establishing a sense of camaraderie among cross functional teams was instrumental in enhancing my teamwork skills and professional confidence.

Emory Goizueta Essay 3: The best piece of advice I've received is...

From a friend who recommended to me the “SECRET”, a book close to my heart. This book or rather should I say a simple revelation wrapped up in a series of fragments which prove its veracity has changed my view of life.

“Count your blessings” and “Thoughts become things” –these are some handy adages commonly passed onto people by their elders. But as we grow, we start disregarding such positive notions in the name of pragmatism.

I have had failures and disappointments in my life –times when I felt bogged down enough to let it all go. There were instances when self-doubt became overwhelming. I wanted to give up. But this book has taught me to believe in myself, to trust that everything is in the mind and that I have the power to change outcomes. All I can and need ever do is devote myself to what I am doing, while the universe creates a path forward.

The positivity all these thoughts bring about has shown in my own performance and those of teams I have led. I feel it is important for a manager to believe in herself and her team’s potential. If she is insecure because of the possibility of failure, then her team is likely to perform poorly. A challenging situation can be dealt with more efficiently if the mindset facing it is calm and positive.

I look forward to inspiring my fellow students at Emory to make life enriching by sharing my insights and learning theirs.

Emory Goizueta Essay 2 :Share one of your most significant professional accomplishments. Describe your precise role in this activity and how it has helped to shape your management skills.

XX has an XX-based browsing solution for emerging markets, but a new product developed in Samoa created a disruptive innovation at the global scale, using XX technology instead of XX and threatened the leadership position XX enjoyed. Concern was expressed from global VP level to immediately develop a XX platform, and retain our Global market share.. Owing to my leadership and strong technical skill sets, I was asked to lead this critical project. Being a critical project that threatened the very survival of XX’s SIM Browser in emerging markets, there was no room for error. I lead a task force of 3 relatively inexperienced developers in XX, coordinating with technology and marketing teams in Zurich and Munich, to oversee the product development and deployment.

The people under me were relatively inexperienced, I had to constantly motivate and guide them. Firstly I divided feature modules and started a pre study phase. I and leveraged internal knowledge base so as not to re-invest the wheels. Based on the experience of engineers I assigned them responsibilities based on their strong areas. I believe in collaborative leadership that’s what I followed. I set small targets and rewarded the targets with small incentives such as lunch/team outings. At a stage of a project, I realized the need to test various handsets and using my network I called in a favor from the handset team in Japan to help us on certain aspects of handset testing. I also had to take care about the management aspect of product.  I had to explain the progress to higher management.  I had to highlight the risks and justify the budget and the schedule.

My team and i delivered this complex product in-spite of resource and time constraints. The solution, which XX has since submitted for patent, was demoed at the Mobile World Congress garnering interest from an incredibly diverse range of players. XX is developing the proof-of-concept into an official product.

I learnt that, however big a challenge and however daunting it night look – One could achieve / overcome it with the right focus and approach. A leader must believe in power of team work and inspire people so and help them realize their full potential. This was true test of my character, leadership ability and taught me a great deal about executing and managing teams in crisis and pressure situations. I learned the importance of networking, and importance of investing in building relationship.
