Wharton Essays

Wharton application essay questions for 2010 are a package of mostly typical MBA essays with slight change of perspective in one or two. The basic intention of the admission committee is to evaluate your personal and professional attributes (or drawbacks) through these essays. Therefore, the more genuinely you portray your own self in these essays, the more will be your likeliness to score.

Wharton Essay 1: As a leader in global business, Wharton is committed to sustaining "a truly global presence through its engagement in the world". What goals are you committed to and why? How do you envision the Wharton MBA contributing to the attainment of those goals? (750-1000 words)
Essay Tips:
Through this multi-questionnaire essay, the committee not only wants you to answer a series of career goal questions but also wants you to use those to reach a broader destination. A perfect recipe for this essay will definitely include your take on short-term goal, long-term goal, career vision, utility of Wharton in your career and your probable contribution to Wharton’s global commitments. However, that is not all of it. While discussing on those topics, you have to relate one with another and effortlessly flow towards a conclusion. For example, while describing your goals, do not limit those within your immediate expectations; rather try to connect those with a broader global context. Lastly, try to cite real life experiences to emphasis on the ‘why Wharton?’ part and show that you have done proper research before settling for the course.

Wharton Essay 2: Tell us about a time when you had to adapt by accepting/understanding the perspective of people different from yourself. (750-1000 words)

Essay Tips: At times, a leader has to come out from a rigid standpoint and acclimatize with others. Do you have that in you? If yes, then this is your chance to prove that. Pick an incident from your real life experiences where you had to interact with people with different thoughts, culture, gender, or anything. The difference should be something that stood as a hindrance in your activity. If you have ever worked in a cross-cultural environment then you may easily find such instances. Whatever is the difference, at first establish it as an obstacle and clarify how difficult it was to handle. Then stress on the options you had and the option you chose. Lastly elaborate the details of your adaptation procedure with special focus on what you learnt from the incident.

Wharton Essay 3: Describe a failure that you have experienced. What role did you play, and what did you learn about yourself? (500 words)

Essay Tips: Nothing succeeds like success. So, when you become successful, even your small mistakes on the way to success are often glorified. On the contrary, when you fail, you are supposed to scrutinize your drawbacks and take positive steps to overcome those. That is when your real character comes into play showing clearly whether you a born leader or not. This essay is great scope for you to tell the committee that you have that in you to qualify for the course. While selecting one incident of failure make sure that it was something that taught you a lesson of lifetime. In other words, a failure that proved to be a blessing in disguise for you will be the best one to describe here. Once you have recollected such an incident, start revealing that with special focus on your thought process at that time. After stating how you failed, do stress on why you think you failed. Your feedback on the issue is far more important than the issue itself.

Wharton Essay 4: Choose one of the following questions (500 words):
a. Give us a specific example of a time when you solved a complex problem.
Essay Tips:
This is another chance for you to stand out from the crowd. Show that you can think or act differently at times to resolve complex issues. Everyone has his/her own style of approaching a problem. So, what’s your style of approach…compromising or diplomatic or straightforward? Do you strive for uprooting a problem or like to take temporary measures?  The admission committee would like to know all these about you from this essay. The problem that you solved should have some intricacy that can challenge anybody. Describe it and then talk about your way of solving it in detail.

b. Tell us about something significant that you have done to improve yourself, in either your professional and/or personal endeavors.

Essay Tips: Quite similar to essay-3, this one again calls for your self-assessment skills. If you can judge yourself critically, only then you can work on your faults and stride towards improvements. So, unless that you have a critical eye on your own activities, you can’t track your loopholes, your faults and also your improvements. Therefore, the actual intention of the committee is to judge how much aware you are of your own actions. Are you committed to improvements? If yes, then you can definitely tell about your recent significant improvements either in personal or professional life.

Wharton Optional Essay: If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the Committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, significant weaknesses in your application). (250 words)

Essay Tips: The committee wants a brief explanation on your weaknesses in this essay. Unless you really have something to explain, don’t attempt this one. Also remember that this is not a place give excuses for some of your shortcomings. If you really have some solid reason to defend only then you can use this opportunity to clarify yourself. As you have limited words to express yourself, so try to come to the point quickly. Most importantly keep a positive attitude towards overcoming your negative aspects and show that you are confident enough to win.
